ultimately satisfying

Pet Shop Boys have been keeping busy! With "Ultimately", their forthcoming hits retrospective, scheduled to hit the "shops" on November 1, they have managed to find time to trawl the vaults of the BBC.

Neil and Chris came up with some wonderful televised moments for the bonus DVD which will form part of the special edition of the collection. It looks like they've included performances of nearly every one of their singles from "West End Girls" through "I'm With Stupid".

Interesting to note some omissions. "Where The Streets Have No Name (I Can't Take My Eyes Off You)" is probably missing due to copyright issues with Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio who wrote "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" for Frankie Valli. Odd to see "Go West" and "I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind Of Thing" not represented considering they both featured on "Very", one of PSB's biggest elpees. And I would like to have seen "Before" in the mix.

Without further hesitation, here is what you will see on the PSB DVD!

Also, their entire performance at this year's Glastonbury festival will be included on the DVD. That's pretty good value for your money even though they've already issued the "Pandemonium" tour on DVD.

  1. This contract-obliging CD/DVD is awful. This is the 5th (!!!) hits package after Discography, PopArt, the Mail On Sunday freebie and the Brazilian import Party. It's actually the 6th if you count Concrete, the live version of a greatest hits. All the TOTP appearences are on YouTube or the BBC's own TOTP website. The Opportunities Whistle Test appearence has popped up several times and... need I go on?

I suppose it's a great stocking filler for someone who 'quite likes the Pet Shop Boys' but it's definitely not for fans.

    @ Phil
Bottom line is that nowadays, the music (format) is merely merch- it's treated and marketed as such. From a label/publisher stand point (especially EMI), it's a great way to utilize and put to work those assets. My only fear is that the PSB catalog become exploited to the point whereas its value significantly decreases. Every time a license is granted, a catalog's value takes a hit. There's a reason an individual such as Prince could actually demand an advance from iTunes.

Last night, I pulled out my favorite PSB 12", Domino Dancing, and cued it up. Choices, choices, choices...I actually went with the amazing Disco Mix of Don Juan. At the end of the night, I played the Alternative Mix of Domino Dancing. Afterwards, some of us gathered and had a terrific talk about why this release was and still is to a certain degree, tremendously slept on. This EP dropped in the midst of a lot of business and programming changes that were occurring or were about to occur in the industry.

Sorry for the rant :0) I <3 my PSB!

  4. @xolondon - Oh, yes! That's missing, too. I was surprised to see "Flamboyant" included.
