a league of their own

Something exciting for the first post of 2010. Looks like Phil Oakey and co. have signed a brand new deal with well respected label, Wall Of Sound. They're the folks that signed Grace Jones and released "Hurricane" to critical acclaim in 2008. And they're the home of Norwegian electronicists, Röyksopp.

Now they are turning their attention to The Human League, progenitors of electronic pop, who will return with their first longplayer in nearly nine years! Huzzah!

It will be the follow up to "Secrets" which included the fantastic single, "All I Ever Wanted". It should've been a massive hit.

This is Phil talking...

  1. Yes, "Secrets" was great, but "Octopus" was even better. How rare it was to get two good albums from the League in a row. That hadn't happened since the first two!

  2. Oooh thanks for the news! I LOVED Secrets--their best album in my book. Such a shame when Phil said they'd never make another because it sold so poorly after the best reviews they'd ever gotten. "All I Ever Wanted" was a corker of a single. Can you believe they didn't even perform it at the show I saw them on in 2007? Blasphemy! I will say that it was the most entertaining time I had seen them, however. Their staging was particularly good--they covered the entire floor in white, matching all their white instruments! Can't believe it's been NINE years. The time is now...

  3. Oops. I forgot about "Dare!" that was actually three great albums in a row from The League right up front. I still maintain that "Travelogue" and "Dare" are their best, with "Travelogue" indisputably at the top of the heap. I simply can't imagine better electronic music being made in this age. The methodologies and techniques which helped to shape that album have all but vanished.

  4. Vinni, thank you thank you thank you for this post. I've often wondered what happened to the "Mirror Man". If this track is any indication of their new record, I'm ready to dowload. The production sounds so good I might have to pick up a vinyl copy as well ; ) Thanks for sharing!

  6. @David - Although The Human League haven't been the most prolific, they had several, very good albums including "Octopus" from 1995 and "Secrets" from 2001. I would suggest picking up both of those. Top notch electro pop!

  7. I can't believe that nine years have elapsed since we last had some Human League material. Secrets was wonderful and AIEW was such a good single.

Symmetry with Little Boots was a nice surprise, as was the collaboration with The All Seeing I a few years ago. We need more though Mr Oakey, so hurrah for your new record deal!
