beautiful boys

We've just been on the horn with EMI. It looks like the late 60s panache of "Beautiful People" will be the third single from "Yes", the Pet Shop Boys' tenth, studio longplayer. It's certain to follow previous singles, "Love Etc." and "Did You See Me Coming?", into the hit parade.

It's a bit shocking as most fans and followers of everything PSB surely thought "All Over The World" would've been the second or third single. The glam stomp of "Pandemonium" was my personal favorite.

"Yes" is jam packed with single choices. And I'm sure it wasn't easy to decide. After all, if this was fifteen or twenty years ago, four or five singles probably would've been lifted from the album with a surprise, non-album single thrown in for good measure. Those were the good old days. Wouldn't it have been amazing for them to have put out their version of Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" as a single?

Let's hope "Beautiful People" performs better than its predecessor which reached #21 in the UK singles chart making it only their third single to peak outside the top 20.

And in a brilliant moment of serendipity and coincidence, I just received my tickets to see PSB at Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC on September 1. The anticipation begins building now.

  1. I actually would have predicted that "More Than A Dream" would've been the next single. But I agree, this album is packed with strong potential singles!

  3. Not a good choice given the hit factory that is Yes. "Beautiful People" is bside material and the rare "skip" track on the album that even juiced up production can't save. When you consider the trinity of obvious singles "All Over The World", "More Than A Dream", and "Pandemonium" all are poised to gain more attention than the choice. I could see a slightly reworked version of the two latter tracks turning into successful duets. This seems like the fast track to another failed single.

  4. Second best choice. Of course "All over the world" should have been a single first, but "Beautiful people" is my favourite track on the album and it's surely different sounding than any other PSB single. And guess what: PSB don't need to convince their own fans, but other music buyers...

  6. I suppose we should be greatful that we're getting a third single, however what a terrible choice considering what else they could have picked. It's "Numb" all over again.

  8. I think they must assess what everyone wants/expects, then do the opposite. How very.

  9. I think EMI is trying the patience of fans...the further crap we release as a single, the more fans will buy it? Perhaps they will do a lifetime contract with PSB if this lazy thing goes top 20...

  10. Emi are destroying psb and their fan base. With this third single it going to be another chaos in the charts.

  11. Probably a flop. More Than a Dream or All Around the World are much better choices as singles.

  12. Pandemonium.....it will create pandemonium if they release beautiful people, totally wrong choice, i like the song but its not chart material these days, all over the world should be next single followed by at the end of the year, pandemonium, to coincide with their christmas uk dates in my opinion...come on EMI and the boys, see sense.....

  13. My least favorite song on YES. I would have gone with The Way It Used To Be, Pandemonium, All Around The World or More Than A Dream.

  19. Don't you "Beautiful People" (single #3) know that the third single release from a new album ALWAYS has to be a ballad?? ;) (it's something to do with the record company contract, me thinks..)
