Oh, my morning monkey.

This is a year of triumphant returns from many quarters. The Blow Monkeys just splashed their new video across the interwebs. The single, "Oh My", is the first taster from their forthcoming album, "Feels Like A New Morning".

It's a slinky groover that features a circular riff which runs around throughout the song while Dr. Robert ruminates about the pitfalls that come with the race for riches.

While it's closer to the slower, blue-eyed soul of breakthrough album "Animal Magic", the album is rumored to feature a few grittier, T. Rex inspired songs, a sound which dominated their debut "Limping For A Generation". Apparently, there are a couple of dance oriented tracks, but nothing as housed up as the Chicago flavored barnstormers they released toward the end of the 80s and in the early 90s.

"Oh My" will be released on April 1. "Feels Like A New Morning" will hit the "shops" on April 29.

    1. Agreed! I think this album shows more promise than the last two. I like "Devil's Tavern" and "Travelin' Souls", but they didn't stick with me. Something was missing.

  2. Sacre bleu! I was just grooving to "Devil's Tavern" yesterday and like Echorich, I was thinking to myself, "has it been five years since "Devil's Tavern?" I really need to get up to date on the Blow Monkeys! I needed the "Travelin' Souls" album/DVD and "Staring At The Sea" and I thought the new album was already out. At least I'm slightly ahead of the curve on that one! Howard is a top rank songwriter, and a hell of a guitarist, but the rest of the band are such a crack team. They take the material up to the Blow Monkeys level. It's been so good to have them back as a unit.

Re: Chicago House barnstormers. Of all the UK bands that hopped aboard that very long freight train, they were the ones that did it right! The material was consistently excellent and hearing it, even now, I don't think 'ghod, more House music!" but instead "why couldn't every band use that trend this well?"

    1. You are absolutely correct on the pop/house crossover The Blow Monkeys infused into their sound in the late 80s. Solid through and through. I think ABC did an amazing job with it, too. Take a listen to "Up". "One Better World" is timeless and should've been a massive hit.

  3. Robert and TBM understood House and worked with some very of the moment house producers to create such wonderful songs.
I am a big fan of ABC's foray into House, but I have to say that Martin's lyrical prowess was constrained by the four to the floor format. I believe Abracadabra, although the product of a unit on the wane, is a highly underrated album.

  4. This video is the kind of thing Paul Weller wishes he were doing. There I said it.
